"Projections from the posterolateral olfactory amygdala to the ..." posted by ~Ray

Vertebrates sense chemical stimuli through the olfactory receptor neurons whose axons project to the main olfactory bulb. The main projections of the olfactory bulb are directed to the olfactory cortex and olfactory amygdala (the anterior and posterolateral cortical amygdalae). The posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus mainly projects to other amygdaloid nuclei; other seemingly minor outputs are directed to the ventral striatum in particular to the olfactory tubercle and the islands of Calleja. Although the olfactory projections have been previously described in the literature injection of dextran-amines into the rat main olfactory bulb was performed with the aim of delimiting the olfactory tubercle and posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus in our own material. Injection of dextran-amines into the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus of rats resulted in anterograde labeling in the ventral striatum in particular in the core of the nucleus accumbens and in the medial olfactory tubercle including some islands of Calleja and the cell bridges across the ventral pallidum. Injections of Fluoro-Gold into the ventral striatum were performed to allow retrograde confirmation of these projections. The present results increase previous descriptions of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus efferent projections which are mainly directed to the core of the nucleus accumbens and the medial olfactory tubercle. Our data indicate that the projection to the core out of the nucleus accumbens arises from layer III; the projection to the olfactory tubercle arises from layer II and is much more robust than previously thought. This latter projection is directed to the medial olfactory tubercle including the corresponding islands of Calleja an area recently described as critical node for the neural circuit of addiction to some stimulant drugs of abuse. Vertebrates comprehend chemical stimuli through the olfactory epithelium where receptor neurons [] send axons to the main olfactory bulb []. Axons of the projection (mitral) cells of the main olfactory bulb are directed to the olfactory cortex and olfactory amygdala specifically the anterior and posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nuclei [-]. The posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus projects to other amygdaloid nuclei; whereas other seemingly minor outputs are directed to the ventral striatum in particular to the core of the nucleus accumbens and olfactory tubercle [-]. The present data indicate that this projection is not minor in terms of robustness and it is directed to the medial but not to the lateral olfactory tubercle and islands of Calleja as well as to some of the cell bridges of the ventral striatum. Furthermore the projections to the medial olfactory tubercle and to the core of the nucleus accumbens originate in different layers of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus. Interestingly it has recently been demonstrated that the classical reward circuit from the dopaminergic cells of the ventral tegmental area to the nucleus accumbens appears to be irrelevant in mediating the reinforcing properties that male-derived chemicals possess for females []. In differentiate the amygdalo-striatal projections might play a critical role in this behavioral response [ ]. In addition the medial administer of the olfactory tubercle appears to compete a key role in the reinforcing properties of cocaine [] and amphetamines []. Accordingly the present data are particularly interesting in the context of the current view of the functional and anatomical recognise circuits in the ventral striatum []. Regarding the nomenclature used in this inform it is necessary to make some comments. According to previous descriptions of efferent projections of the main olfactory bulb the olfactory amygdala is composed of the anterior cortical amygdaloid nucleus and the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus as opposed to the vomeronasal amygdala which is mainly composed of the medial nucleus and the posteromedial cortical amygdaloid nucleus [,-]. However the anterior cortical amygdaloid nucleus has been recently demonstrated also to receive inputs from the accessory olfactory bulb and consequently should be considered as a mixed chemosensory area []. In the present study therefore the olfactory amygdala was limited to the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus. However the ventral striatal territories included in this study were the nucleus accumbens (which includes the shell core and rostral pole) [ ] the olfactory tubercle [] the cell bridges linking the ventral shell of the accumbens with the olfactory tubercle and the striatopallidal system of the islands of Calleja []. In the present bring home the bacon the projections from the olfactory amygdala and particularly those from the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus to the ventral striatum have been analyzed in rats. Olfactory projections undergo been previously described in studies based on lesion degeneration autoradiography and horseradish peroxidase [,-]. However we performed injections of dextran-amines considered to be among the most sensitive tracers [] into the main olfactory bulb in order to produce our own material in which to identify olfactory structures in dilate []. Subsequently the injections were aimed at the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus and the anterograde labeling was analyzed in the ventral striatum. These pathways have been previously traced using autoradiographic methods in rats and cats [] and in hamsters [] and using leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) in rats []. Our results show a projection to the ventral striatum that is denser than previously described probably because dextran-amines are more sensitive anterograde tracers than are tritiated amino-acids [] and because the injections of PHA-L were located in deep layers of the posterior cortical amygdala [] and are therefore not comparable to those of the present report (see discussion). Finally injections of the retrograde tracer Fluoro-Gold were aimed at different sites of the ventral striatum to allow retrograde confirmation of the amygdalo-striatal connections. Throughout the results the nomenclature of Paxinos and Watson has been used []. Six injections of biotinylated dextran-amine were placed at the main olfactory bulb. inspect 7605 is described as a representative case. The results of these injections were in agreement with previous descriptions of the projections from the main olfactory bulb [-, ,]. The description of the results is focused on our areas of interest i e. the olfactory tubercle and the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus. The injection affected the dorsal portion of the mitral cell layer of the main olfactory bulb (Fig. ). The accessory olfactory bulb was not contaminated by the injection site. Labeled fibers coursing dorsally in the lateral olfactory tract traveled between the mitral and granule cell layers of the accessory olfactory bulb [] and ventrally below the anterior olfactory nucleus (Fig. ). In the rostral (Fig. ) and caudal (Fig. ) levels of the olfactory tubercle labeled fibers were found in forge I sublamina Ia [] (Fig. ) throughout its medio-lateral and antero-posterior axes. Interestingly in some parts of the lateral olfactory tubercle sublamina Ib seemed to disappear and labeled fibers were seen to be adjacent to the cell bodies of layer II (asterisk in ). The bundle of labeled fibers became progressively thinner from lateral to medial (Fig. ). In fact in the more medial portion sublamina Ib also narrowed and cell bodies bordered the labeled fibers in sublamina Ia. Caudally labeled fibers occupied the most superficial administer of layer I in the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus which could be easily recognized on cytoarchitectonic grounds as come up as in the piriform cortex (Fig. ). Sublamina Ia appeared thicker in the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus compared with the piriform cortex (Fig. ). Projections from the main olfactory bulb. Parasaggital (A) and coronal (B-F) Nissl-counterstained sections of the rat brain showing anterograde labeling (B-F) after a biotinylated dextran-amine injection into the main olfactory bulb (A). For abbreviations see list. Calibration bar: A 1250 μm; B. C. E 400 μm; D. F 100 μm. Four injections of biotinylated dextran-amine were placed in the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus. Case 7705 is described as an example. The injection place affected a few cells of layer II (Fig. ). The description of the labeling is limited to the ventral striatum. Rostrally labeled fibers were distributed along the medial olfactory tubercle particularly in layers II and III and surrounding the medial islands of Calleja (Fig. ). More caudally the pattern of labeling was similar in the medial olfactory tubercle and islands of calleja (Fig. ). The labeled terminal fields in the olfactory tubercle/islands of Calleja on the one hand and in the lateral shell of the nucleus accumbens on the other were linked by dense labeling in some of the intervening cell bridges of the ventral striatum (Fig. ). Some fibers also could be observed in the caudal lateral portion of the shell of the nucleus accumbens (Fig. ) and the ventral pallidum (Fig. ). Projections from the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus. Coronal Nissl-counterstained sections of the rat brain showing anterograde labeling (B-F) after a biotinylated dextran-amine injection into the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus (A). For abbreviations see list. Calibration bar: A. B. E 400 μm; C. F 100 μm; D 50 μm. Four injections of fluorescein-labeled dextran-amine were targeted to the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus. Case 8705 received an injection similar to that of inspect 7705 which mostly affected layer II (Fig. ). As expected the pattern of labeling was similar to that obtained after biotinylated dextran-amine injections including the medial olfactory tubercle island of Calleja cell bridges of the ventral striatum and the caudal ventrolateral administer of the bomb of the nucleus accumbens. A few labeled fibers were also observed in the ventral pallidum (Fig. ). Injection of inspect 9905 involved layer III of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus (Fig. ). The pattern of labeling in the ventral striatum was similar to the one described for the previous injections but dense anterograde labeling was observed in the core of nucleus accumbens (Fig. ; compare with Fig. ). Projections from layers of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus. Coronal sections of rat brain showing anterograde labeling (B. D) after injection of fluorescein dextran-amine into layers II (A) and III (C) of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus respectively. For abbreviations see enumerate. Calibration bar: A. C 400 μm; B. D 200 μm. Six injections of Fluoro-Gold affected the olfactory tubercle. The injection in case 1207 involved layers II and III of the caudal olfactory tubercle (Fig. ). Apart from retrograde-labeled cells in areas such as the basolateral amygdaloid complex and the amygdalo-hippocampal convert area (not shown) a number of labeled cells were observed in layer II of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus (Fig. ). Five injections of Fluoro-Gold were placed at the core of the nucleus accumbens. Case 7307 is described as an example. The injection site was restricted to the core of the nucleus (Fig. ). Retrograde labeling was observed in addition to the other structures (see []) in layer III of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus (Fig. ). The aim of the present bring home the bacon was to characterize the direct olfactory inputs from olfactory-recipient amygdaloid structures to ventral striatal territories that may underlie the reinforcing properties of chemical stimuli. A direct projection from the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus to the medial olfactory tubercle islands of Calleja and the ventrolateral shell and core of the nucleus accumbens has been described. Injections of anterograde tracers into layer II of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus (cases 7705 and 8705) resulted in anterograde labeling in the medial olfactory tubercle and islands of Calleja and sparse labeling in the ventrolateral shell of the nucleus accumbens and ventral pallidum. orb confirmation was obtained by injection into the olfactory tubercle (case 1207). Injections of anterograde tracers involving forge III (case 9905) gave rise in addition to conspicuous anterograde labeling in the core of the nucleus accumbens. Retrograde confirmation of this projection was obtained following injection into the core of the nucleus accumbens (case 7307). Therefore layers II and III of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus send differential projections to the medial olfactory tubercle and islands of Calleja and to the core of the nucleus accumbens respectively. The efferent connections of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus have been studied previously in different species [ ,]. In rats injections into the periamygdaloid cortex i e. the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus in Scalia and Winans' nomenclature [] resulted in anterograde labeling mostly concentrated in layer II of the olfactory tubercle and around medially located islands of Calleja. No labeling was observed in the nucleus accumbens or ventral putamen []. In hamsters efferents from the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus alter in layers II and III of the olfactory tubercle mostly in the medial part. Labeling was also observed around but not whithin the islands of Calleja []. More recently and also in rats on the basis of injections in the deepest move of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus this nucleus has been reported to "provide a very sparse input to the fundus of the striatum and to medial parts of the olfactory tubercle" with fibers also reaching the core of the nucleus accumbens []. Our present results confirm this findings and grow previous descriptions because some of the cited reports used the autoradiographic method of tritiated amino acids [ ] which is less sensitive and produces large injection sites compared with iontophoretic injections of more modern tracers. Our data provide a more accurate account of these projections. Conversely iontophoretic injections of leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) which is as sensitive as biotinylated dextran-amine [] were placed in the deepest part of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus [] (a location that is usually considered to be within the amygdalo-hippocampal area rather than the posterolateral cortical nucleus) and the findings were therefore only partially comparable to the present results. Our results demonstrate in dilate that the input from the posterolateral cortical amygdala extends in layer II and layer III of the olfactory tubercle and that varicose fibers not only surround but enter the islands of Calleja (Fig. ). Furthermore we have confirmed this amygdalo-striatal projection by using retrograde tracing. Although previous studies already suggested that the olfactory tubercle islands of Calleja and nucleus accumbens were targeted by projections from the cortical amygdala [,-] our results demonstrate that at least in the posterolateral cortical amygdala the inputs to the olfactory tubercle and islands of Calleja mostly arise from layer II whereas those directed to the nucleus accumbens core arise from layer III. The olfactory tubercle receives direct olfactory inputs through layer I from the main olfactory bulb (Fig. ) and indirect olfactory inputs in layers II and III from the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus (Figs. ). The function of this indirect projection is unknown. In addition the cells of the islands of Calleja [] could receive indirect olfactory inputs from the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus (Fig. ) the functional implications of which are also unknown. A be of findings suggest a possible role for such projections. Amygdalo-striatal pathways particularly the projections from the basolateral amygdala to the nucleus accumbens have been implicated in addiction and reward phenomena [-]. Recently the involvement of the ventral striatum in reward has been redefined to include not only the nucleus accumbens but also the olfactory tubercle particularly its medial portion [ ]. The reward circuits in the ventral striatum would change two functionally distinct subsystems a medial one composed of the medial shell of the nucleus accumbens and the medial olfactory tubercle and a lateral subsystem that would include the core and lateral shell of nucleus accumbens plus the lateral aspect of the olfactory tubercle []. Conversely it has been demonstrated that some chemical signals such as sexual pheromones are innately attractive i e. intrinsically reinforcing [ ]. Furthermore odorants associated with involatile pheromones have been suggested to become reinforcing through an olfactory-vomeronasal associative learning process that may bear on the basolateral amygdala []. The posteromedial cortical amygdaloid nucleus (move of the vomeronasal amygdala) also projects to the olfactory tubercle islands of Calleja cell bridges of the ventral striatum and shell of the nucleus accumbens [] which suggests that the association of olfactory and vomeronasal information in rewarding events could also take place in the ventral striatum. Contrary to the traditional view of separate functional and anatomical axes through the forebrain for the olfactory and vomeronasal systems [,] recent data tell that secondary olfactory and vomeronasal projections converge in the rostral basal telencephalon []. Similarly olfactory and vomeronasal information converges in the posteromedial cortical amygdaloid nucleus []. New data from our group indicate that vomeronasal and olfactory information could approach in the ventral striatum through the posterolateral (present report) and posteromedial [] cortical amygdalae respectively. The present study demonstrates an indirect olfactory input from the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus to the ventral striatum. Neurons of layer II of the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus project to layers II and III of the olfactory tubercle and islands of Calleja; in contrast cells in layer III project to the core of the nucleus accumbens. These projections could constitute the neural basis for processing the reinforcing properties of olfactory stimuli. Twenty-five adult male and female Sprague-Dawley rats from the University Hospital of Albacete were used in the present study. Experimental procedures were carried out according to the guidelines of the European Community on welfare of research animals (directive 86/609/EEC) and were approved by the Ethical Committees of Animal Research of the University of Castilla-La Mancha for grants PAC-05-007 and PCC08-0064. Calier. Barcelona. 0.5 ml/kg. 10 mg/kg). The animals were placed into a stereotaxic apparatus and the skull was trepanned at the intended injection site. Iontophoretic injections of dextran-amines conjugated to biotin (BDA) or fluorescein (FDA) (10% in phosphate buffered saline. 10,000 MW lysine fixable. Molecular Probes. Eugene. OR) and Fluoro-Gold (FG) (2% in saline solution methanesulfonate hydroxystilbamidine. Biotium. Hayward. CA) were performed. Tracers were delivered from micropipettes (10–50 μm diameter tips) by means of positive current pulses (7/7 sec. 2–7 μA. 10–20 min). Five to eight days later animals were anesthetized (as described above) and transcardially perfused with saline solution followed by 4% paraformaldehyde in phosphate buffer. The brains were postfixed for 4 hours and cryoprotected overnight with 30% buffered sucrose. Series of frontal sections (50 μm) were obtained with a freezing microtome. For BDA detection endogenous peroxidase activity was quenched using 1% H (in 0.05 M Tris buffered saline pH 7.6 for 30 min). Sections were incubated for 2 hours in avidin-biotin complex (ABC elite kit. Vector. Burlingame. CA; diluted in 0.05 M Tris buffered saline pH 7.6) and visualized with 0.025% 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (Sigma. St. Louis. MO) diluted in 0.05 M Tris modify (pH 8.0) with 0.1% ammonium nickel sulfate and 0.01% H Assuming that tract-tracing techniques are largely based on qualitative descriptions some methodological considerations are necessary when comparing the previous literature on the amygdalo-striatal projections with the present results regarding the relative density of projections. Relatively large injections of tritiated amino-acids into the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus gave go to a moderate labeling of grains in the olfactory tubercle and islands of Calleja [ leucoagglutinin [] are not comparable to the present report because the injections are placed in deep layers of the amygdala. In the present report fully restricted injections of dextran-amines into the posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus (Figs. ) gave rise to a dense meshwork of labeled fibers in the cell bridges and medial olfactory tubercle (Fig. ). Therefore the density of this amygdalo-striatal projection has been previously underestimated probably due to technical limitations. The authors thank members of LNH and LCFN for fruitful discussions and Dr. García Olmo for her help with the animals. "Calling all Seattle area working moms" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 20:27:57

Someone cause to be perceived* recently suggested I connect some sort of support assort for working moms in downtown Seattle. I thought that was a great idea. The problem was I wasn’t sure how to go about doing that. So I asked her if she had any idea where I would find a said support assort. Asking me if I’ve “tried the internet” is like asking me if I’ve eaten pizza this week. Duh of course I’ve tried the internet. The internet and I undergo a very very close relationship. But I hadn’t really looked on the internet for a give assort for local working moms. A quick brought up a ton of links and I started to click over to check out most of them. come up except for the ones that sounded maim. I am into only cool things and cool people. Clearly. (It’s funny how when searching on google for other. I find a cerebrate to myself. A lot of good that will do me. I’ve already met 250+ member group and then patiently waited come my inbox for her say. It took a week but my communicate to join the group was finally accepted. I was pretty excited. Again I patiently waited to hear about their next cater up. object that they aren’t having one during the Holidays. Great. In the convey measure I’ll look around the groups website in anticipation of their next meet up. And dude it better be a good one. So tell me have you (or anyone you know) ever joined a support group like this? And if so please express us all about it. Isabel is a pseudonym for this Seattle-based blogger. She’s been working since the day she realized soda and lip gloss weren’t free. Isabel became a mom in 2006 and continues to work full time outside the home since diapers and mortgages aren’t free either. You can read far too much about her personal life at. I joined one for organizing and cleaning the house. But it’s not terribly active and when we try to get together only 2 populate show up. Then again I’m in Grand Forks. ND instead of Seattle. I have met at least one great friend from it though and at least I undergo one person I can commiserate with about getting things organized and know that she understands. I’ve tried looking for something like that around here but haven’t been able to sight anything specifically for working moms. And all of the moms groups I have open tend to have meet-ups during the days… I hope this one works out for you! I met a wonderful assort of mommy friends during the short period of time that I was a SAHM. We met at a co-op through the local community college. change surface though a few of us undergo moved away we comfort act in touch. When I moved to Seattle I looked for something similar - and found one - that meets in the evenings. But after I went to the first meeting. I entangle out of place. I adjudge that I made some snap judgements but I didn’t think I was going to find what I was looking for in that assort. I’ve yet to find something else. I’m curious to experience if the group you open is a good one. ordain you be my guinea pig and let me know? If you joined the one I am guessing you joined I am also a member. I had found a great group in Spokane that did a lot of activities on weekends and evenings so a mix of SAHM and Working moms. I loved it. We moved back to Seattle in June 07 and the working moms assort I joined here was dead for a lot of the summer and during the go started doing more. Unfourtunately the weekend activities cut on bad weekends for me and I be North of Seattle so getting to locations was not always easy but they do seem to act around the area. I hope I can make the next activity. From what you said sounds desire it will be after the first of the year. I’ve looked for groups in the past and had no luck. I talked to someone once in the doctor’s office and she told me about the one she belonged to but then I ask the million dollar challenge do you meet in the evenings and it was no so I never joined.. I’m curious to see how your group works out. Making new friends is always nice. It's too bad the video stops before you actually go away seeing a decent approximation to the normal distribution. By the way. I almost named this blog which is a name for this forge but I decided that people might have affect spelling it. Wow!I did see a real-life quincunx once in a science museum somewhere.. if I could only remember where. What I do remember is thinking "Hey that's a Gaussian" before remembering that a) the CDFs actually look similar and b) For large enough n and some condition on p a binomial approximates a Gaussian. Great communicate! Well besides the fact that "quincunx" sounds vaguely alter... Say did you dress your comments settings or did Google do that for you? I evidently can't give my label and URL like I used to.

SAN JUAN — City Secretary Nancy Davalos will likely face felony charges for allegedly stealing about $1,500 from the city of Port Isabel when she was employed there. Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos said. Davalos. turn Isabel’s city secretary until early this summer is suspected of stealing money from that city in May just before she took her position with San Juan. Villalobos said. The money she allegedly stole was from taxicab certify fees that were supposed to be paid to the city. Late measure month. Davalos said she hoped to back up San Juan to impose taxi cab fees. Authorities learned of the suspected theft a few weeks ago when Port Isabel officials noticed discrepancies in financial records. Villalobos said. The Cameron County District Attorney’s office will probably file charges against Davalos within about a week. Villalobos said. The San Juan City equip held an executive session Monday night to address Davalos who after the meeting said she had no comment on the allegations. She said she has not been fired from her position with San Juan. San Juan City Attorney Javier Villalobos. Mayor San Juanita Sanchez and City Manager Willie Seguin could not be reached for comment late Monday night. Port Isabel’s missing money is from fees the A-Taxi company owed according to an article in the Island blow which originally reported on the investigation. Port Isabel City Commissioner Martin Cantu III told the Island blow that he sold the A-Taxi affiliate to a man named Orlando Ochoa in December but franchise fees Ochoa paid never appeared in the city’s books change surface though he had a receipt signed by Davalos crv Please go and compel these guidelines:1. "Fencepost errors, intervals, redeeming coupons, and drinking" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:31:08

A friend of exploit asked today: if a coupon says it expires on a certain date is that the last go out that it's usable or the first go out that it's not usable? (He was referring in particular to the customized coupons that print out on receipts at CVS if you participate in their "loyalty program".)My answer: the last day it's usable. This is basically by analogy with more "traditional" coupons which are likely to discontinue on say. "September 30". It seems reasonable that one could use the coupon on every day in September and on no day in October; it would not seem reasonable to be able to use the coupon on every day in September but one. Coupons printed out by this schedule discontinue on seemingly random dates but it seems that the same principle should apply there. Similarly if I said "the homework is due on Thursday" to my students and then one of them handed it in on Thursday at noon. I would not say that what I really meant is "Thursday is the first day on which I will not evaluate the homework" and that therefore the homework is late. (In practice I usually say what measure the homework is due in order to avoid this challenge.)I'm not sure what the law actually has to say about this though. I do know that laws in various places approve different interpretations with believe to the "sell by" date on milk: in some jurisdictions the "sell by" go out is the measure go out on which the milk can be sold and in others it is the first day on which it cannot. I'm inclined to say that one is always allowed to do the thing on the date which is stated so it should be permitted to reestablish a coupon change a carton of milk etc on the go out listed on it. Similarly if there's something that I'm allowed to do if I am "at least N years old" I should be able to do it on my Nth birthday and the law agrees with me. (There's an exception of sorts for drinking actually; in some states one cannot drink at midnight on one's 21st birthday but must act until the bars have closed and re-opened again. A friend of exploit turned 21 in Massachusetts and was disappointed to hit the books this. Apparently the reason for these laws is that some people were trying to take 21 shots between midnight and last call often 1am or 2am and they were dying. Dying was seen by the lawmakers to be a Bad Thing.) There's a symmetry here in that both of these are "permissive" interpretations. But the scenario in which one is always forbidden to do a thing on the date stated on the appropriate piece of paper (so no redeeming a coupon on its expiration date no drinking on your 21st birthday) also is symmetrical in a way -- one might label it a "strict" interpretation. One could also undergo "early" and "late" interpretations -- the "early" interpretation would be that you can't redeem the coupon but you can drink and the "late" interpretation the change. These four cases are roughly analogous to the four sets of inequalites a ≤ x ≤ b a < x < b a ≤ x < b and a < x ≤ b although making the analogy precise takes more time than I want to pay on this. The English language (and most others I anticipate) allows you to denote several different things here. You said:"I'm inclined to say that one is always allowed to do the thing on the date which is stated so it should be permitted to redeem a coupon change a carton of milk etc on the go out listed on it."This is so only if "do the thing" is what the the quoted language speaks of; but sometimes the quoted language speaks of the opposite and then it takes the boundary case with it. For example if my coupon says "good (i e redeemable) until" September 30 then the allowed activity is "redeeming". I evaluate to be able to redeem it on September 30. But if the coupon says it expires on September 30 then I cerebrate that it remains unexpired on Sept. 29 is expired on Oct. 1 and becomes expired on Sept. 30. Expiration and becoming unredeemable are one and the same event. In order for the coupon to change state unredeemable on September 30 as opposed to October 1 then on September 30 I may not reestablish it. Expiration and redemption are two mutually exclusive events. Which one you mean to be excluded on a particular day is selected by which language you use to describe the event that happens on the 30th. But no matter how you slice this logic for mathematicians some people from common walks of life will get it the other way and that's what judges interpreting book print undergo to broach with. For example my ascribe card says "good thru 11/30". To me that pretty clearly means I may use it on Nov. 30 but not on Dec 1. Therefore according to my construction of the word it becomes expired and unusable (i e. expires) on Dec 1. But I get in trouble if I try to specify an "expiration date" of 12/yy on credit card forms; I must specify 11/yy which is patently incorrect. But there's no arguing with a credit database just as there's no arguing with people who insisted 2000 was (or wasn't take your pick) the first year of the new millenium.
